High Standards vs. Dysmorphia
In the gay community, we talk a lot about Body Dysmorphia. And it IS a real, serious issue for many. But for others, feeling unsatisfied with your physique isn’t a mental illness—it’s accurate feedback.
If you look in the mirror and think “I want to have more muscle,” and you objectively don’t have much muscle… that’s not dysmorphia. That’s a goal.
The Danger of Labeling
When we label every dissatisfaction as “dysmorphia,” we rob ourselves of agency. Dysmorphia is something that happens to you. A goal is something you work towards.
- Dysmorphia: You are 8% body fat but see yourself as obese. Your perception contradicts reality.
- Ambition: You are 20% body fat and want to be 12%. Your perception matches reality, and you want to change it.
Channeling Dissatisfaction
Don’t let dissatisfaction paralyze you. Let it fuel you. If you aren’t happy with where you are, acknowledge it. Love yourself enough to take care of your body, but respect yourself enough to demand progress.
You are allowed to want more for yourself.
